SOUND FOR WELLBEING
The impact sound has on us is subtle while also being direct and powerful.
We may choose to listen to music to boost our energy and soothe our hearts, but it can also get on our nerves! That’s because the vibrations affect our whole being.
Science has shown that everything in the universe is made up of vibrating particles. Although we may think of ourselves as flesh, blood and bone, we are primarily energy beings. Rudolph Steiner likened the body to an orchestra with organs and body parts vibrating at different resonances.
When an aspect of us is out of harmony, the energy flow in that area is blocked and we experience a malaise of one kind or another, or dis-ease. As sound healers, we use instruments and our voices to re-tune the vibration and resonances in another person’s energy field, helping to restore flow and harmony. This is through a process called entrainment.
The harmonics inherent in the human voice and other healing sounds have the capacity to slow down our brain waves and regulate our heart rate and blood pressure. They take us into a state of deep relaxation where we can access our creative inner knowing about the shifts that need to take place for self-healing to occur.
Audible breathing, humming, and vocal toning all activate our vagus nerve. Also known as the ‘wandering’ nerve, it connects our brain to our digestive system via our throat and voice box, lungs and heart and is a key component in the parasympathetic ‘rest-and-restoration’ branch of our nervous system.
Whether or not we think of ourselves as ‘singers’, each of our voices is unique. Using our voice to make sound is expressing who we are and can help us to maintain our physical, mental and emotional balance.
